As the ancient Romans designated the 1st day of March, which is again the first day of Roman calendar, as the New Year day, that the concept of designating the first day of the calendar year as the New Year celebration day began. It was during 153 BC the Romans added January and February in the calendar which resulted in the changing the New Year celebration from March to January. New Year history is thus the living chronicle of New Year celebration and its related tradition, beliefs, folklore and convention and is the legend of the romantic journey from the ancient age to the modern era.

The elite of society were accustomed to hanging large tapestries on the walls of their homes, a tradition from the Middle Ages. These tapestries added color to the room as well as providing an insulating layer between the stone walls and the room, thus retaining heat in the room. However, tapestries were extremely expensive and so only the very rich could afford them. Less well-off members of the elite, unable to buy tapestries due either to prices or wars preventing international trade, turned to new wallpaper to brighten up their rooms.

Early 2012 wallpaper featured scenes similar to those depicted on tapestries, and large sheets of the paper were sometimes hung loose on the walls, in the style of tapestries, and sometimes pasted as today. Prints were very often pasted to walls, instead of being framed and hung, and the largest sizes of prints, which came in several sheets, were probably mainly intended to be pasted to walls. Some important artists made such pieces, notably Albrecht Dürer, who worked on both large picture prints and also ornament prints intended for wall-hanging. The largest picture print was The Triumphal Arch commissioned by the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I and completed in 1515. This measured a colossal 3.57 by 2.95 metres, made up of 192 sheets, and was printed in a first edition of 700 copies, intended to be hung in palaces and, in particular, town halls, after hand-coloring.

Desktop backgrounds are what used to be known as computer wallpapers. Although wallpapers that we know of today seem trivial, it also has its history and evolutionary process. The term wallpaper is actually derived from Microsoft Windows. It is in this operating system where the term "wallpaper" was introduced. For MAC, it used to be called a "desktop picture." The use of desktop backgrounds may be traced to as early as 1975. This was part of the experimental or trial system being designed for the office by XeroxPAC, the name of which is Officetalk. The patterns used for the pictures were gray dots. Just like in dot matrix pictures of earlier computers, the dots were pixelated. All of the wallpapers before were just whiter, black, or gray since there were no colored monitors yet at that period. Eventually, the emergence of colored monitors gave way to much better pictures of higher pixel content and better picture output.
